The “flu” season is in a full flow and with it Christmas is fast approaching. The last thing we wish for is to go down with a seasonal bug and spend the beautiful festive season in bed. So, here it is my natural remedy which everyone is going to enjoy.
Homemade ginger liqueur to combat flu and cold
0.5 L Vodka (not an expensive brand)
125 g Honey (approximately 6 Tbsp ideally from your local beekeeper)
125 g Ginger - freshly grated or cut into small pieces
1 Lemon - peeled and sliced
1 Orange - peeled and sliced
Leave the white pith on the fruit it is really good for you - read on below
Put all ingredients together in a large container and leave to stand for 3 days stirring when you have time. Then put it through a sieve and decant into a nice bottle. Take a small shot or two in the evening. And if you are not going to drive you could take a small shot in the morning on an empty stomach. It makes a nice gift too!
So, is this Homemade Flu and Cold Remedy another old woman’s tale or a truly an enjoyable remedy and prevention aid? Ok, here is the science bit:
We know that oranges and lemons have vitamins but did you know that in their pith (the white bits between the peel and flesh of the fruit - sometimes called the connective tissue of the citrus fruits) there are very important immune-boosting compounds?
Both orange and lemon pith contains vitamin C, fibre, folate, riboflavine, thiamine, vitamin B6 and calcium, flavonoids and polyphenols. And that is not all. Citrus fruit pith is rich in polyphenols hesperidin, naringenin and polymethoxyflavones plant compounds which are strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidants, which may prevent and manage many chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease. They are also being studied for their potential anti-cancer effects.
Further more the glorious ginger contains gingerol. Gingerol has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Studies have shown that it has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal effects which could reduce the risk of infection. There are other proven benefits of ginger but we may talk about these in another post.
Enjoy the lovely Homemade Flu and Cold Remedy Liqueur and stay healthy!
